Shame has to be met with empathetic support. We can't hold it on our own.

Babies and children need to know that the caregiver can meet their emotions in a supportive way. If the caregiver was overwhelmed at a time when something happened for the child then the child won't know how to process the emotion and will get confused. This can leave an imprint in the nervous system and continue to repeat itself in adult life. The good news is that we can build new neural pathways!

Here's a short video I've made to illustrate what can happen.

A message to parents,

We all have struggles as parents.

If we are parents, we are all responding to our children in ways that are less than optimal.

Our places of struggle have to do with how we were parented.

And none of us had perfect parents.
